Tajinaste

Hugging a tajinaste in Tenerife

Tajinaste (Echim wildpretii) is a striking biennial plant that forms a dense, cone-shaped tower of hundreds of tiny red or pinkish-coral blossoms. It can shoot up to 3 meters tall out of dry, volcanic rock. It is endemic to the high-altitude volcanic slopes of Mount Teide in Tenerife. It blooms in late spring, coating the stark lava fields in vibrant red and pink colors, attracting massive swarms of local honeybees.
